Commmon law were we or not.

My late husband and I met and lived together from 1982 until 1984.  Then we were married.  We divorced in 1987.  However, within two months we were back together But we never did remarry legally.  I am on SSI now and I sure could use the extra assistance. If I could find the public law Number that recognize our type of union,

It is neither.  Louisiana is NOT a common law state and when you divorce it is finial.  You would have had to remarry to receive any additional assistance.  Sorry :'(

while this answer is correct now, this may change soon in light of obama's directive to the states regarding same sex unions. the reason is this: if we recognize same sex uinons without an 'official' marriage we will constitutionally have to recognize heterosexual unions. So, right now the answer is correct, but keep your eyes and ears open.

also, if you were ever in south carolina and said you were husband and wife, this answer will vary....because their common law marriage laws were extremely liberal.
